Medium Composition & Improvements
In 1978, F-G Agar was introduced, providing enhanced growth for L. pneumophila. Building on this, Freely et al. modified the medium by replacing starch with activated charcoal and introducing yeast extract as a vitamin source, resulting in the formulation of Charcoal Yeast Extract (CYE) Agar.
Further enhancements were made in 1980 with the incorporation of ACES (N-2-acetamido-2-aminoethane sulfonic acid) buffer, as reported by Pasculle et al. This refined approach was supplemented the following year by Edelstein's addition of the potassium salt of alpha-ketoglutaric acid, thereby increasing the medium's sensitivity and growth capabilities.
