EC Medium, Modified with Novobiocin
Intended Use:
EC Medium, Modified with Novobiocin is specifically formulated for the selective enrichment of Escherichia coli O157:H7.
Product Summary and Explanation:
The EC Medium was initially developed by Hajna and Perry to enhance the detection methods for the coliform group and E. coli. This specialized medium features a buffered lactose broth supplemented with 0.15% Bile Salts Mixture, which effectively inhibits the growth of spore-forming bacteria and fecal streptococci due to the action of bile salts.
Further advancements were introduced by Okrend and Rose, who modified the EC Medium by lowering the Bile Salts Mixture concentration to 1.12% and incorporating 20 mg/L of sodium novobiocin. This formulation, known as Modified EC & Novobiocin (mEC&N), has been well-documented for its efficacy in the enrichment and detection of E. coli O157:H7 from various food sources, particularly meats and poultry.
Currently, EC Medium, Modified with Novobiocin, is recognized and recommended by the U.S.D.A. for its pivotal role in food safety and microbiological testing.
