EC Medium (7206)
Intended Use:
EC Medium is specifically designed for the detection of coliform bacteria at 37°C and for the isolation of Escherichia coli at elevated temperatures (44.5°C and 45.5°C). This makes it an essential tool in microbiological testing.
Product Summary and Explanation:
Developed by Hajna and Perry, EC Medium enhances traditional methods for detecting coliform bacteria and E. coli. Comprised of a buffered lactose broth, this medium includes a 0.15% Bile Salts Mixture that effectively inhibits the growth of spore-forming bacteria and fecal streptococci, while promoting the growth of E. coli.
When used at 37°C, EC Medium facilitates the detection of coliform organisms, while its elevated temperature applications (44.5°C and 45.5°C) allow for the isolation of fecal coliforms. This makes it highly relevant in various environmental microbiology studies, including investigations of drinking water, stream pollution, raw water sources, and wastewater treatment systems. It is also effective for monitoring bathing waters, seawaters, and general water-quality assessments.
In addition, EC Medium is utilized in the Most Probable Number (MPN) test for fecal coliforms. It is important to note that while EC Medium plays a crucial role in fecal coliform detection, it should not be used for the direct isolation of coliforms without prior enrichment in appropriate presumptive media to ensure optimal recovery of fecal coliforms.
