Intended Use
Lauryl Sulfate Broth w/MUG is specifically designed for the detection of coliforms and performs fluorogenic detection of Escherichia coli.
Product Summary and Explanation
The coliform group encompasses aerobic and facultative anaerobic, Gram-negative, non-sporeforming bacilli that ferment lactose, producing acid and gas at 35°C within 48 hours. This group mainly includes members of the Enterobacteriaceae family, but can also comprise organisms like Aeromonas spp.. Testing methods for detecting coliforms are utilized in the analysis of water, food products, dairy, and various other materials.
Lauryl Sulfate Broth, also known as Lauryl Tryptose Broth, adheres to the well-established formula set forth by Mallmann and Darby. Their research highlighted Sodium Lauryl Sulfate as the most effective agent for inhibiting non-coliform organisms. In a further study by Feng and Hartman, a rapid assay for E. coli was developed by introducing 4-methylumbelliferyl-D-glucuronide (MUG) at a concentration of 100 µg/mL into the Lauryl Sulfate Broth. The integration of MUG allows for the precise detection of E. coli amid coliform colonies.
This medium is endorsed by the American Public Health Association (APHA) as well as the Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC), underscoring its reliability and efficacy in microbiological analysis.
