Product Summary and Explanation:

Salmonellosis presents a significant public health concern globally. While infections with non-typhi Salmonella may often lead to mild, self-limiting illnesses, Salmonella typhi can lead to severe complications such as typhoid fever, characterized by fever, headache, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. In extreme cases, it poses risks of fatal respiratory, hepatic, or neurological damage. Transmission can occur through the ingestion of raw or improperly processed food contaminated with Salmonella, making the monitoring of these organisms essential in food safety.

Originally described by Kristensen, Lester, and Jurgens, Brilliant Green Agar serves as an effective primary plating medium for isolating Salmonella. It is particularly beneficial in differentiating “paratyphoid B” strains from other intestinal gram-negative bacilli. Kaufmann later adapted this formulation alongside Tetrathionate Broth in stool specimen analysis, emphasizing its importance in clinical testing.

The exceptional selectivity of Brilliant Green Agar allows for the use of moderately heavy inocula, ensuring an even distribution over its surface. This versatility also extends to its applicability in microbial limit tests, and when supplemented with novobiocin, it proves invaluable for food testing, further enhancing its role in public health microbiology.
